40 Gigabit San Solution For Welsh Water.

Infosys have 4 separate 10 Gigabit Wavelengths between Dwr Cymru Welsh Water’s main platforms in Ark Data Centre, Corsham in Wiltshire, and Next Generation Data in Newport.

next connex provided Infosys with six 10Gb wavelength services linking 4 data centres for Infosys's customer Dwr Cymru Welsh Water (DCWW). These services were delivered on time, against tight deadlines and the service received from next connex was exemplary throughout.

next connex were very helpful, co-ooperative and understood the requirement and urgency, and provided the wavelengths in half the lead time compared to other vendors.These circuits have now been in service for over a year without any downtime. Highly recommend  next connex in providing high capacity circuits within UK and EU.

Project Background for Infosys

Vodafone were initially considered but could not meet Welsh Water’s key milestone date due to their standard 120 day lead time. next connex were able to deliver in 60 working days. Initially Level 3 and Virgin Media Business Circuits were selected. These providers gave us assurances that these circuits were diverse from each other for the entirety of their routes.

20 days into the project these providers revealed, after a deep level route survey, that the routes ran along the same railway line for a considerable distance. We had to react quickly to ensure that we delivered the true diversity that Infosys promised and Welsh Water demanded. BT was selected as a provider who could offer a route diverse from the others, but the circuit
would not be delivered by the deadline date. With no other way to install a circuit in time to meet the deadline next connex installed temporary circuits which backhauled via an Interoute cross connect in Ark, to our core network in Equinix LD5, then passed across via our core fibre network to NGD Newport.

System Details

For the first year of the contract there are also temporary 10Gigabit circuits between Ark and Bridgend, and NGD and Bridgend, in order to move data over from Welsh Water’s previous provider (CGI) to the new one. Each network link can be scaled up quickly and easily as the Welsh Water requirement changes, enabling expansion simply and quickly. The 4 main 10Gigabit waves are diverse between Ark and NGD, with one 10Gb link from each side being split using a Cisco ASR (Aggregation Services Router) This enables us to segregate the wavelength to be used for used for QoS dependant data services, such as IP telephony, email services, plant telemetry and control and automation systems.
